Google Him

The International Center of Photography has several ongoing fashion photography exhibit for but one that really interested me was the Martin Munkácsi exhibit called Munkacsi's Lost Archive. Munkacsi a Jewish German actually began as a sports photographer in the early 1900's. And while he's most remembered for his fashion photography shooting for Die Dame (a German publication) and Harper's Baazar capturing the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Leslie Howard, Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Jane Russell, Louis Armstrong, and Fred Astaire, he also photographed many pivotal moments during World War II including "The Day of Postdam" and Adolf Hitlers most trusted officials. Check him out...

Label Whores

I just came across an article in NY Magazine that disturbed me, and simultaneously that I could totally empathize with. The article is call The Fashion Theif: What one serial shoplifter will do for the labels he loves" In summary it's a bout a 17 yr old young man who was obsessed with labels so much that it drove him to steal. Now my man wasn't stealing nickel and dime pieces from JC Penny he went for the big score stealing from stores like Barneys, Bergdorf and Goodman, and Prada to name a few. What I found most revealing was there's a piece of him in a lot of us...no we aren't going to the extreme of stealing, but we'll gladly not pay our bills for those new pair of sneakers, or pair of jeans, so that we can proudly display it's logo, and for what? What does a logo mean? I mean lets be honest 90% of us who want to buy Gucci, Louis Vuitton, aren't really concerned with the quality, it's the name, the prestige associated with the brand that we are seeking, so much so that we are willing to sell ourselves short and resorting to things that we wouldn't be proud to of to get it, rather than find our own personal style. The ironic thing is style isn't necessarily expensive, or opulent...it's you. It's the unspoken representation of your character, and your persona, what you want to say to the world before you ever utter a sentence, and you don't have to do much but pay...attention to what, and how you wear your expression. But I digress...I'm off my soap box. I hope everyone had a great monday.

Mr. Debonair

My apologies for the delay in corresponding with you my weekend was rather hectic more on that later...Last week I had the pleasure of going to annual event at Texas State University called Mr. Debonair, an embodiment of sophisticated swagger and urbane characteristics personified through a series of scenes in which each contestant performs. The night started out with a rendition of "My Girl" followed by each contestants introduction, succeeded by a talent portion. Following this each contestant provide a platform for workshops they would like to implement on campus to help the community, and lastly was the evening wear portion in which each contestant was adorned in their finest evening attire escorting a beautiful lady on their arm followed by a Q & A. I have to say I was entertained and thoroughly enjoyed myself...the icing on the cake came when my boys both received honors: John Luna "Fly Guy 2009" wore a black three piece suit with a pink shirt black bow tie and a rose in his pocket and John Juarez walked away with crown wearing a 3 button gray Zegna suit, with black Ferragamo loafers, red socks, and an ascot, you don't get much more debonair than that.

I'm trying to get through these next two weeks as quickly as possible so I can get back to the "A" the ignorant mess me and the family is about to get into lol...stay tuned.
